How Do You Talk to Recruiters at a Career Fair

How Do You Talk to Recruiters at a Career Fair A career fair is an event for employers and recruiters to meet with prospective job seekers, many of whom are students or new college/university graduates. At a career fair, you get to meet with employers and recruiters in an informal setting, and learn more about internship and job opportunities offered by their companies. It is a goldmine of networking opportunities. However, as a student or new graduate, you may be overwhelmed and nervous, and not sure how to start a conversation with these  recruiters. The good news is that you are not alone! Here’s a quick guide on how to talk to recruiters: 1. Introduce yourself A good way to break the ice is by introducing yourself to a recruiter. Start with a firm handshake and tell them your name, what you are studying, and year in school. Tell them you are glad to have the opportunity to talk with them about your career interests, and how your experience might fit in with their companies. 2. Get down to the nitty gritty Now that the recruiter knows a bit about you, it is time to get down to the nitty gritty. Tell them what you know about their company and why you are interested in working there. Of course, you have to be prepared and learn about these companies before you set foot at a career fair. Look up information on company websites and their social media channels so that you have some knowledge before hand.   Once you have demonstrated to a recruiter that you have done your homework, talk about your academic and work experiences in more detail. You should highlight your skills and make it clear about what you are interested in and why. Most recruiters don’t carry the conversation initially so you will have to play an active role in marketing yourself. Tell them what you are interested in and not what you think they want to hear. In other words, be confident and be yourself. 3. Keep in touch When it’s time to wrap up your conversation, don’t forget to thank the recruiters for their time. If you have any final questions, ask them now. In addition, ask them how you should move forward with the application process and what the best way for you to stay in touch with them is. Some of them will refer you to their company websites if they have an online application process while others may ask for a paper copy of your resume so bring a few copies. If you have your own business card, don’t forget to hand some out. 4. Be confident No matter what happens during your conversations, be confident. First impressions always count and it is a great thing to show that you believe in yourself and what you can achieve! Realise the employer is not up your street? Heres how to politely end that conversation.

Writing Babysitting On Resume

Writing Babysitting On ResumeDo you write your parenting skills on a resume? How do you know whether you should or not? Keep reading to find out. After reading resumes of individuals in my own profession for several years, I have found that sometimes it is best to leave your writing skills off the resume. This isn't always an easy decision, but sometimes it is.As a writer, I've come across several individuals who were extremely professional, but who had issues with co-workers. Their skills as a parent and their personal skills were excellent, but their co-workers didn't think so. Some of them were willing to sacrifice everything to be able to be a parent, while others felt their skills were enough to make a positive impact on their co-workers. And some were flexible enough to work with coworkers to bring out the best in each other. If you're not quite sure if you should be placing a parenting section on your resume, there are several reasons why you may want to consider it. For one thi ng, parenting skills to help you be successful as a career. If you're willing to sacrifice your job and your career to be a parent, then you should be happy with your job and career, as well.If you're already a mother and you're self-employed, you may think it would be difficult to add a parenting section. But, that's actually an advantage. Many employers want people with experience and expertise in a certain field, and many moms are happy to point this out, and if they're already making the sacrifices needed to raise a child, they can certainly talk about how well they're doing as a mom!Another reason why it may be best to leave your writing skills off your resume is that not all employers are going to require you to put themon. While some will want you to, others will be fine without them. If this is the case, there's no harm in making sure your skills are up to par.If you are asked to put your writing skills on your resume, be sure to include the basics. When you have worked as a preschool teacher, childcare educator, daycare provider, or some other similar position, you will need to include that you are also someone who cares about children.Keep in mind that it is important to have examples of your work. Show employers that you can successfully balance work and family. They'll see that you have accomplished it successfully before, and they'll be better prepared to hire you.

How to date your co-worker

How to date your co-worker When we are not in the garden, I obsess about how I want to redesign my blog to look like the Pioneer Womans blog. I want to be the Pioneer Woman on Suicide Watch. That will be the new title of my blog. I am obsessed with stealing her blog design. Melissa sits in my garden with me and talks. She likes to talk to me in my garden because she says its the only time I dont interrupt her. In the garden Melissa narrates her Facebook activity like its a horse race. And she takes pictures of the farm all day long and posts them to Facebook. Her Facebook friends tell her she is really lucky to be living on a farm. An old friend of hers that is really not her friend but her ex-boyfriends friend, says, Youre so lucky. I wish I were on a farm right now. Melissa tells me he is a designer who can write code and he wants to live on the farm. Invite him, I say. She tells him, You can come live here. Penelope needs a designer. Can you redesign her blog? He says yes. Melissa gives him one of the ten thousand free tickets she has from living in Hong Kong and Milan with jet-set millionaires who foot the bill for everything. I get giddy. I start making notes about my love for the Pioneer Womans layout. Melissa is giddy because she suddenly remembers that this guy is cute. Whats his name again? Cullen. Colin? No. Cullen. Colin? Cullen. You already have a Wisconsin accent. Cullen arrives from Austin the next day. He says he was going to move out of his apartment anyway. So he spent the next 10 hours packing and moving all his stuff to storage. My sons love him right away. So does Melissa. The flirting between them is so obvious that the Farmer starts making jokes. We have never seen Melissa so charming. Also, I tell Melissa I need photos of Cullen for the blog, and she sends me a series of swooning pictures of Cullen on the farm. I tell her, Are you kidding me? My blog is not Tiger Beat. I make our porch into a bedroom for Cullen. This seems okay because he is spending only a few weeks here redesigning my blog. Melissa sets up a big desk for Cullens computer and screen. In her bedroom. It just fits better here, she says, appealing to the interior decorator in me. Melissa tells Cullen he can put all his stuff in her room because theres so much more storage there than on the porch, where hes sleeping. Melissa and I spent weeks creating a sort of still-life-of-Melissa in her bedroom. I cant decide if I think Cullen is a sweet addition or an unexpected eyesore. That was the first two days of Cullen. The third day, I started worrying that maybe the porch is sort of yucky. But still, I was surprised to see Cullen in Melissas bed. Do you notice how he matched? It was ominous. So the Farmer laid down house rules to Melissa. No sleeping in the same bed because our kids know you guys just met. They cant see you guys in bed together. Actually, he made the house rules but I was who told her. It felt ridiculous. But not as ridiculous as it would have been to explain to the kids why Melissa is in bed with the guy who just showed up at our house two days ago. Then, the next day, Melissa is in bed with Cullen. Sort of just sleeping there like, maybe, if there were one bed left in the whole world, sleeping how I would, next to one of my brothers. But still. It broke the new house rule. So we had to have a summit meeting. The four of us. The farmer explained that we cant have the kids exposed to confusing sexual relationships in their own house. I dont want to ever see or hear you guys having sex in the house. That was nice, I thought. He left things sort of open-ended for in the barn, the hayfield, and other places that might be romantic to two twentysomethings who dont actually have their own home. Okay. Fast forward. Melissa is gone all the time, fawning over Cullen. Cullen is not doing anything on my blog because he has Melissaa full-time joband he has a full-time job at this startup Daily Dot, which, maybe I am officially launching, since I dont think they have announced yet. But anyway the editor-in-chief is Owen Thomas who is one of my favorite bloggers. So I keep thinking, Owen is working with Cullen so I want to be working with Cullen too. Actually, I want to be working with Owen and Cullen. I want everyone to be working on my new blog design. I have a lot of ideas. Like, I could do a cooking blog where I write about bulimia. No one does that. I think Owen would be a great editor. Melissa could take photos of stuff to throw up. But there is no one around. Everyone is busy doing Daily Dot and dating on the farm. Its asparagus time on the farm. On the farm, you eat whatever is in season until it is gone. You get sick of it before its gone, but you try to remember that as soon as its gone, youll miss it. We eat asparagus every day and its so fun to pick it and cook it, but its not fun to serve it to Cullen and Melissa when I feel like Im running a BB. So I tell them that we need to talk. I am not getting a good deal here. Melissa is not being a good friend because she is falling in love and when you fall in love its like youre losing your mind (literally) and I feel like, at best, I have an insane friend . So I dont have a friend and I dont have a guy working on my blog and I have these two people who dont cook or clean. Not that Id want them to. Wait, Im so excited to tell you thisMelissa is a member of the incompetent elite. A commenter said this about her after an earlier post, and we have adopted the term for her. So, Melissa is part of the incompetent elite and cannot cook or clean. Cullen says he will start working on my blog. I say, Okay. Then I can pretend Melissa is your fun girlfriend you brought along to the farm when you came here to work on my blog. Pause. So, you guys are boyfriend and girlfriend now. I dont have patience for the slow pace of courtship. They look at each other. They say okay. They laugh. I say, Im happy for you guys. Then I say, You have to sleep in the same bedroom. I cant have the kids seeing you sleeping separately and then see you sleeping together. So Cullen, just move into Melissas room. They look at each other. I say, Sorry to be bossy. But I have to look out for the kids. They say okay. They look nervous. I tell them, Wait here. Ill get you a bottle of wine to celebrate.

Personal Branding Interview Michael Hyatt - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Personal Branding Interview Michael Hyatt - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Today, I spoke to Michael Hyatt, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Thomas Nelson Publishers, the largest Christian publishing company in the world and the seventh largest trade book publishing company in the U.S. In this interview, Michael talks about how and when he started using social media tools, the impact blogging has had on his life, what types of authors get book deals, his thoughts on the future of publishing, and more. What got you started blogging and using Twitter in the first place? I began blogging in 1998, before it was even called blogging. I blogged in fits and starts, usually around the launch of various projects. However, I began again in April 2004 because I wanted to be able to better engage with our employees, authors, and customers. In April 2008, I began twittering at the recommendation of a close friend. I just was going to try it out for 30 days, and it stuck. How has using these tools impacted your life personally and professionally? Blogging helps me clarify my own thinking. This is probably the primary benefit of blogging for me. Sometimes I am not sure what I think about a topic until I have written on it. Writing helps me untangle my thoughts. Blogging has given me first-hand experience with emerging technologies. I have listened to many CEOs pontificate on this or that technology. But they are not speaking form personal experienceâ€"and it shows. When you actually use a technology, your learning and insights go to a higher level. Blogging has provided me with a mechanism for instant feedback. I love the fact that people can comment on what I have written. Blogging has helped me bypass traditional media when necessary. I didn’t really understand this at the outset, but it has proven very helpful. When the media fail to get the story right, I can quickly address it and provide my side of the story. This has been particularly helpful when we make big decisions that cause people to speculate. A blog post can stop a rumor dead in its tracks. Blogging has made our company more visible. I currently have more than 100,000 readers a month. I have received scores of emails from people who had never heard of Thomas Nelson before stumbling onto my blog. Also, my blog has given me a way to “put a face on the company” and, I think, make it more personal. Twitter allows family, friends, and others to follow my activity throughout the day and keep up with my life. Twitter enables me to meet new friends. I am following several people that I would have never met otherwise. These are relationships have proven very fruitful. Twitter encourages me to think consciously about my life. What am I doing now? What kind of story is my life telling? Is this really what I want to be doing? Could Iâ€"should Iâ€"be choosing something different? When you, and your company, look to bring on authors, how important is their personal brand and marketing platform? Is it more important today than it was ten years ago? As a publisher, I would love to have a great book from an author with a giant platform but you rarely get both. I still believe in the power of a great concept and great writing. Authors should focus on the aspects of the publishing process they can control beginning with writing the best manuscript possible. That being said, it is important for an inspiring author to do what they can to build their audience. What do you think about these new publishing platforms, including the iPad, Kindle, and Nook? Are they the future? Yes, I believe that over time the bulk of publishing will be done digitally. New devices are being designed everyday that make it easier for consumers to digest words and ideas. This is definitely an exciting time to work in publishing. How important is it for you to be out in the public as the human face of Thomas Nelson? How do you and your company benefit by this? As CEO, I feel that one of my main responsibilities is to get visibility for Thomas Nelson. Networking and communicating are two of the most important parts of my job. In today’s marketplace, companies need to have personality. Customers don’t want to champion a corporation, they want to champion people. As my team and I get more involved in social media, we commonly hear that customers seek out Thomas Nelson products because of their interaction online with our people. Looking back, what business decisions did you make early in your career that have helped you be successful today? I decided that even though I had completed my formal education that I would be a life-long learner. I seek out experts who can broaden my knowledge base through executive coaching, mentoring, and reading. These resources have helped me take my leadership to the next level. Michael Hyatt is the Chief Executive Officer of Thomas Nelson Publishers, the largest Christian publishing company in the world and the seventh largest trade book publishing company in the U.S. His company is privately-held and he has worked at the company for a total of fourteen years. He began my publishing career at Word Publishing while a student at Baylor University. He worked at Word for a total of six years. In addition to serving as Vice President of Marketing at Thomas Nelson in the mid-80s, He also started his own publishing company, Wolgemuth Hyatt, with his partner Robert Wolgemuth in 1986. Word eventually acquired his   company in 1992. He was a successful literary agent from 1992 until early 1998. He has also written four books, one of which landed on the New York Times bestseller list where it stayed for seven months. He is currently working on two new books, which he plans to announce closer to publication. He is also the former Chairman of the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association (ECPA).

Journey into leadership Two interesting days - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog

Journey into leadership Two interesting days - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog This post is part of a series that follows A.M. Starkin, a young manager taking his first major steps into leadership. Starkin writes here to share his experiences and to get input from others, so please share with him your thoughts and ideas. Dear me! and dear anyone. Let me pick out two significant days since my last post that are really significant. Thursday last week, 9:15 in the morning everyone comes in systematically late. My ops manager/deputy pulls me aside and says that she has had enough of this place, and that she is only waiting for a better salary offer to leave. And that I might as well begin thinking of hiring because two others are going to leave real soon. Early afternoon: I go through the current workfiles with everyone and find out that we are neither paying our suppliers nor invoicing our customers or that we are doing both much too late and accumulating a HUGE backlog. Thus: People are demotivated to the point that nobody wants to do anything. Those of my team who still believe in us seem to be expecting a superhero who arrives with answers to all their questions while others have lost every hope and are just waiting for an opportunity to leave. Can you think of a point of departure for my journey which is more basic than this one? Apart from the office being on fire? My ops manager can be really strong if she is on our side. If she would take the same responsibility for her job as she apparently does for her private life, she will be really good for us. Right now she is extremely illoyal. To be worked on brutally honest, affirmative and extremely constructive. There are a couple of really resourceful people in my team and I am sure that changing the environment quickly will bring out the best in them. I am also convinced that the rest can become responsable and happy colleagues. It will take some courage on my part! I have a lot of ideas on how we can change for the better, and they will have to like it for it to work. My seniors have all adviced me to use fear as motivation: If we dont change this quickly, well close the subsidiary and youll all lose your jobs. Or if you dont behave well fire you! Lets see That Thursday I had decided to present my strategy to everyone: 1) We need to go out and find customers as the corporate salespeople are too busy elsewhere 2) We need to fix all our IT-problems which are making payment and invoicing hyper difficult 3) We need to begin learning constantly, all of us 4) We need to begin putting in place all sorts of small productivity-increasing things which will enable us to make more money and be less irritated by routine AND 5) we need to have fun while doing all that and our daily jobs. I wanted everyone to pick whatever they felt for working on of those areas except the part about having fun, where I proposed to take turns on being the chief happiness officer (called it something else). I suggested that those who were completely against my strategy considered whether they wanted to be part of this project at all and thus whether they wanted to stay in the company and I proposed that they all spend a week to consider how they would like to contribute. The room was painfully silent and I had made the usual mistake of not noticing my audience while I was speaking consumed by enthusiasm over my idea. I expected some scepticism because everybody already had problems getting everything done in a day. But this silence ssshhhhh was a bit scary given what the day had brought so far. I then pulled my ops manager aside to discuss her future: Did she want to stay or go? Ded she buy in to my project? I tried to be as sincere and positive as possible. How did she feel that her own attitude contributed to her happiness? I gave her the task of redesigning her own job for bext week: Tell me what you want to do in this company no limits and well rewrite your job description next Thursday. Exciting *** Thursday next week today: (Let me just add that this is a second job for me I have a full time job in another city which I tend to 2-3 days a week. I can only spend 2 days a week in the company we are talking about here so that limits the time I can spend) The office fills up around 9:30: Headache, frustration over traffic, one didnt sleep well. In the afternoon I had called for a first operational meeting, which I started out quite conventionally by asking everyone in turn to tell briefly what was happening. Which happened hesitantly, reluctantly for some. (You have to imagine me trying to convey a positive, affirmative, enthusiastic attitude out into this thick fog of frustration and lack of hope.) Then I asked everyone to get up from their chairs and continue the meeting standing. I spoke once again enthusistically about my project and asked who was against it and who doubted it. One said she wasnt against but frankly she didnt care about it and did not want to participate. I had put all 5 of the above strategy domainson a whiteboard and while I went out to make a phonecall I asked everyone to sign up for as much as they felt like. When I came back there were two camps in the meeting room: Camp North had all signed up for at least one project and were joking about ideas and stuff they could do and Camp South were standing mute, critical and passive one asking whether we could sit back down again. My deputy and I spent an hour together where she did all the talking: About what she wanted to do, about being proactive and we ended up agreeing on a pretty darn excellent project for her, which would be a huge win for everyone. The room was humming with motivation and good vibes. Yes! *** Now what? What do I do about those sceptics? Is the enthusiasm that we created today enough to set the project afoot? We need a quick success story, wouldnt you say? Will the urgencies of non-payment and non-invoicing make the corporate headquarters enforce rigid control procedures that ruin the new deal? Should I celebrate or bite nails? A.M. Starkin Thanks for visiting my blog. If you're new here, you should check out this list of my 10 most popular articles. Secure That Job with the Assistance of a Professional Interview Coach - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach

Secure That Job with the Assistance of a Professional Interview Coach If you’re competing for an in-demand job you need several things: relevant qualifications, appropriate competencies, and the confidence to ensure you make it successfully across the finish line. But that is only the first hurdle you face. While you may have the skills and experience to be a perfect match, first you have to gain the attention of the hiring manager and convince him or her that you are the perfect fit to sign that contract. An interview coach is often best placed to help you gain that confidence to make a positive impression. A well-thought out and exceptionally written CV will gain you an invitation to an interview but what happens behind the interview room door will make or break your job application. This is why hiring a professional interview coach has become an essential job search tool. Interview coaches can help candidates find their voice The job interview is designed to identify and evaluate the suitability of a candidate to the requirements of a position. This is determined by posing different types of questions â€" simple to complex from experience and credential verification questions to competency-based and behavioural questions. For the inexperienced (and for many experienced) interviewee answering questions in what is regarded as a nerve-wrecking experience can often lead one tongue-tied, knowing the answers but not knowing how to verbalise them. A professional job interview coach can help in this and other challenging aspects of the interview. Manage stress and brain freeze   Whether you’re being interviewed by a single hiring manager or have to sit through a gut-wrenching multi-person panel interview, being practised at managing stress levels in a job interview helps in portraying much needed confidence. An interview coach can advise on techniques to employ to ensure that you come across articulate and eloquent. A response “That’s an interesting and unusual question. I need a moment to consider it” when thrown by an unexpected question allow you a bit of time to develop an appropriate response. Body language speaks a powerful language It is not just what you say that is of importance. Non-verbal signals (body language) are closely observed to gain a more accurate reflection of the feelings of a person, and are seen as more powerful and persuasive than words spoken. Positive body language to convey confidence includes a firm handshake at the start of the interview, good eye contact, an upright seated position and nodding to show understanding. Mock interviews provides essential practice opportunities Job hunting requires a certain amount of dedication, like an athlete training to compete at the Olympics. Mock interviews, under the guiding hand of a professional interview coach, provide essential training before you face a life-changing interview. It helps if you see a job interview like sitting an A-level exam. You need practice at answering different level questions, especially those that have you squirming in the hot seat. Additional benefits provided through feedback from a mock interview include: Having an expert help identify those areas of weaknesses in answering questions Providing advice on how to overcome weaknesses View the hiring manager’s perspective and learn how to structure answers to questions accordingly Remember, a polished confident performance in a job interview is a result of practise, practise, and practise. Present your best self from a position of strength under the instruction and advice from an interview coach. Zulfah Abrahams writes for Inspiring Interns, which specialises in sourcing candidates for  internships and graduate jobs.
